What is Bi-directional Parallel?

Bi-directional parallel is a type of data transfer mode used by some printers to communicate with a computer. In bi-directional parallel mode, data can be sent and received simultaneously, allowing for faster printing and more efficient communication between the printer and computer.

In a bi-directional parallel setup, the printer and computer are connected via a parallel cable, which has multiple data lines for transmitting and receiving data. This allows the printer to receive print commands and data from the computer while simultaneously sending status updates and error messages back to the computer. Bi-directional parallel was a common interface for printers in the past, particularly for older laser and dot matrix printers. However, it has largely been replaced by newer interfaces such as USB and Ethernet, which offer faster transfer speeds and more advanced features.
