Blood Pressure

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force of blood against the walls of arteries as it is pumped through the body by the heart. Blood pressure is measured using two numbers: systolic pressure, which is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, and diastolic pressure, which is the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats.

Normal blood pressure is typically defined as a systolic pressure of less than 120 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of less than 80 mmHg. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is defined as a systolic pressure of 130 mmHg or higher, or a diastolic pressure of 80 mmHg or higher. High blood pressure is a common condition that can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems. It can often be managed with lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a healthy diet, and weight management, as well as medication in some cases. Blood pressure can be measured using a sphygmomanometer, which involves wrapping an inflatable cuff around the upper arm and measuring the pressure in the arteries using a pressure gauge. Digital blood pressure monitors are also available for home use and can provide convenient and accurate readings for monitoring blood pressure over time.
