Form Factor

What is Form Factor?

Form Factor is a term used to describe the physical size and shape of a computer component, such as a motherboard, power supply, or storage device.

It is often used as a standard for compatibility between different components. Each form factor has a set of specifications that define its size, shape, and layout, as well as the types of connectors and mounting points it supports. This allows components from different manufacturers to be designed to the same standards, ensuring that they will fit and work properly together. Some common examples of form factors include ATX (Advanced Technology Extended), which is the most common form factor for motherboards, and the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors for hard disk drives and solid-state drives. Other examples include the SFX (Small Form Factor) for power supplies and the M.2 form factor for solid-state drives. Choosing components with compatible form factors is important when building or upgrading a computer system, as it ensures that the components will fit properly and work together as intended.
