IEEE 802.11 b, g, n

What is IEEE 802.11 b, g, n?

IEEE 802.11 b/g/n are wireless communication standards used for Wi-Fi networks.

802.11b was the first widely adopted standard, released in 1999, with a maximum speed of 11 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. 802.11g was released in 2003 and increased the maximum speed to 54 Mbps in the same frequency band. 802.11n, released in 2009, supports speeds up to 600 Mbps using both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands and uses multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology to improve coverage and reduce interference. These standards are backward compatible, meaning devices using older standards can still connect to newer networks, but at the lower speed of their own standard.
