Over Voltage Protection (OVP)

What is Over Voltage Protection (OVP)?

Over Voltage Protection (OVP) is a protective feature in power supplies that safeguards electrical devices from damage due to voltage surges or spikes.

It is an essential feature in power supplies as voltage spikes or surges can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, or short circuits. The OVP feature works by continuously monitoring the output voltage of the power supply. If the voltage exceeds a predetermined threshold level, the OVP circuitry is triggered, and the power supply shuts down to prevent further damage to the electrical equipment. The threshold voltage level for triggering the OVP circuitry is usually set slightly above the maximum operating voltage of the electrical equipment. This ensures that the OVP feature is triggered before the voltage exceeds the safe operating range of the electrical device. In addition to protecting the electrical equipment from damage, the OVP feature also helps to prevent electrical fires and other hazards caused by voltage surges or spikes. Therefore, it is recommended to use power supplies with OVP feature to ensure the safety and longevity of electrical devices
